Sunday Shorts

Goal: To read/review one short story every Sunday in 2018

I poked around a variety of lit magazines and ended up in the fiction archives of The New Yorker. For a magazine with a submission process that’s open to anyone, they print an awful lot of stuff by awfully famous people. But whatever. Now I can read more Colm Tóibín, Zadie Smith, Anne Enright, etc. without committing to entire novels.

Scrolling through, I picked 51 stories based on:

  • Author
    • No more than two by the same author though. A number of stories sounded interesting but didn’t make the cut because that author was already represented x2. Maybe next year?
  • Title
  • Opening Lines

Then I alphabetized them (by author), numbered them, and used a random number generator to determine the order. (51, not 52 because I picked E.M. Forster’s “The Machine Stops” as story #1. I got the idea to do this side-project when I read it last year.)

The best part? I won’t negatively impact anyone’s TBR since these are all short. We’ve all got time for a little short story, right? 😛
